Strong First Quarter Results for Trade Idea Monitor
Expects to Cross One Million Trade Idea Mark in 2Q10
22nd April 2010
youDevise Ltd. reported strong increases for the first quarter ended March 31, 2010 in both the number sell and buy side firms using its Trade Idea Monitor (the TIM) and the volume of ideas crossing the service.
The results reflect continued acceptance and adoption of stock trading ideas as a value-added, commission generating sell-side service and the rebound of the institutional brokerage and money management business around the world.
The number of sell and buy side firms using the TIM in January-March of this year reached a net 619, up 33% year over year and up 7% from the preceding quarter.
youDevise added a net 38 clients in the first quarter of 2010 compared to 35 in the fourth quarter of 2009.
The volume of trade ideas that brokers sent to their clients totaled 180,562, up 5.8% year over year and 34.0% greater than in the preceding quarter. New ideas totaled 94,127, the highest level since the third quarter of 2008, when the financial crisis resulted in unusually strong idea traffic.
Colin Berthoud, founding partner of youDevise and co-developer of the TIM, said growth reflects:
- Increasing buy-side confidence in the long-term value and stability of trade idea investing
- Growing focus on trade ideas by institutional brokers and money managers in North America and Asia
- Consolidation of buy and sell side trade idea activity from peripheral platforms onto the TIM as the world's leading alpha capture, trade idea delivery and management service
The quarter’s activity included steady increases in the percentage of shorts, to 34.1% of new ideas in March 2010, from a record 2008-2010 low of 27.9% in December 2009. A year ago, prior to the markets hitting their 2008-2009 lows, the shorts averaged 44%.
From inception through March 31, 2010, open and closed ideas totaled 929,328, up 73% from a year ago and 16% from December 31, 2009, creating a rich database for measuring the performance of leading brokers. At the current rate, youDevise expects to cross the one million idea mark prior to mid-year.
